Food Fight: Full Fat Versus Non Fat Dairy

milk
As a typical American, I grew up drinking loads of milk, eating plenty of cheese and choosing ice cream as my dessert of choice whenever possible. As a child of the 80’s and 90’s I was taught to eat nonfat everything. I always thought I was making the healthy choice until I started reading the ins and outs of dairy- then I began to question…
Is non-fat dairy all it’s cracked up to be?

Studies show that people who eat full fat dairy have a significantly easier time maintaining weight than those who eat low fat dairy.

Here are three good reasons to consider making the switch…

1. Full fat dairy provides more satiety (makes you feel full for longer) than low fat dairy.

2. Full fat dairy contains all the fat necessary to absorb the accompanying vitamins (D & E- which are both fat soluble ie. you can’t absorb them without the fat).

3. Consuming plenty of healthy fats helps to curb cravings and build a healthy brain!
Full fat dairy tastes delicious- it is a great way to treat yourself without succumbing to all the sugar (assuming you aren’t drinking chocolate milk or eating Trix yogurt). So whether you are looking to control your weight, lose weight or just another healthy snack idea- give full fat dairy a second look!

Here are some of my favorite ways to eat dairy:

-full fat plain yogurt with a drizzle of honey and almond slivers
-a couple slices of grass fed cheddar with apple
-full fat, plain kefir blended with berries
-an Ezekiel english muffin with plenty of grass fed butter

What’s your favorite dairy food?
