I remember when foaming hand soap came on the market and all of a sudden everybody converted. I never really ‘got’ that trend, and can’t say I followed suit. However, now that I have discovered that I can make it, skip all the chemicals AND save a crap-ton of money? Yup, it’s become an addiction. It’s super easy to make, super easy to customize and works like a champ for a variety of purposes.
First, get a foaming soap dispenser. You can buy one filled with soap from the store and repurpose it when it’s empty, or you can buy one online(or make one using the lid from an old, used one). So far I have been repurposing some I had received as gifts, but I have plans to convert some bell jars using the lids. Glass is best if you want to scent with essential oils and add additional antibacterial properties, as the oils can leech the chemicals from plastic out into the soap.
Ok, here’s the fun part! (Did anybody else like making potions as a child as much as I did?)
STEP 1: Fill your foaming soap dispenser to about 1 inch from the top with filtered water. Make sure to do this first or you will end up with a bubbly mess!
STEP 2: Add 2 Tbsp of liquid castille soap (more if it is a large dispenser like one made out of a canning jar- I am currently repurposing a standard soap size bottle). I currently use Dr. Bronner’s peppermint because it is widely available and cheap, but also have a bottle of the unscented baby soap for once I can start using essential oils, and use the Dr. Bronner’s Sal Suds to make a foaming dish soap using this same recipe!
STEP 3: Add 2 Tbsp of olive oil or jojoba oil. I tend to use jojoba as it seems to stay blended better.
STEP 4: (optional) If you have a glass dispenser you can also add a few (up to 20) drops of an essential oil, or blend of essential oils. If you use a plastic jar the essential oils can leech the chemicals from the plastic into the soap. Not ideal for natural body care…
STEP 5: Close and tip dispenser back and forth gently a few times to mix.
Enjoy as hand or body soap, even shampoo if you are feeling adventurous!
